Machinery – DIRECTIVE 2006/42/EC – MAD

Directive 2006/42/EC of 17 May 2006 on machinery, shortly called MAD or MD Directive, applies to the below products:

  1. machinery,
  2. interchangeable equipment,
  3. safety components,
  4. lifting accessories,
  5. chains, ropes and webbing,
  6. removable mechanical transmission devices,
  7. partly completed machinery.

According to the Directive, “machinery” means an assembly, fitted with or intended to be fitted with a drive system other than directly applied human or animal effort, consisting of linked parts or components, at least one of which moves, and which are joined together for a specific application.

The scope of this Directive does not include the following products:

  • specific equipment for use in fairgrounds and/or amusement parks,
  • machinery specially designed or put into service for nuclear purposes which, in the event of failure, may result in an emission of radioactivity,
  • weapons, including firearms,
  • machinery specially designed and constructed for military or police purposes,
  • machinery specially designed and constructed for research purposes for temporary use in laboratories,
    mine winding gear,
  • seagoing vessels and mobile offshore units and machinery installed on board such vessels and/or units,
  • means of transport by air, on water and on rail networks.

The recommended method to demonstrate that the machinery complies with relevant requirements of MAD Directive is application of harmonized standards related to machinery design, service and installation.

Polish Register of Shipping is competent in carrying out certification procedures of machinery and safety components for conformity with relevant harmonized standards.
