PRS at IMOX 2026
The Polish Register of Shipping participated in the 9th Indonesia Marine and Offshore Expo (IMOX) 2026, held from August 5 to 7 at the Radisson Golf & Convention Center in Batam. PRS was represented at this event by Mr. Mohamad Arief, a surveyor from the PRS Shanghai Branch. Over three days, our representative visited exhibitor booths covering shipbuilding, marine tech, ship and equipment fitting, offshore and heavy-lift gear, cargo, logistics, and safety compliance. He also joined networking sessions with industry stakeholders.
PRS expands operation market
The visit constitutes part of PRS ongoing initiative to enhance its presence and visibility within Indonesia’s maritime sector, particularly in Batam, one of Asia’s most significant shipbuilding and offshore fabrication hubs. This is achieved through direct engagement with shipyards, owners, and industry stakeholders, as well as by exploring opportunities for collaboration in classification, certification, and technical advisory services.
Importance of IMOX
IMOX is a prominent international trade exhibition dedicated to Indonesia’s maritime, offshore, and shipbuilding industries, convening shipbuilders, equipment manufacturers, service providers, and classification societies. The 2026 edition was once again hosted in Batam, a key hub for Indonesia’s shipbuilding and offshore manufacturing sectors, attracting thousands of trade visitors and exhibitors from Indonesia and abroad over three days.
Batam – the centre of the shipbuilding industry
The scale of Batam elucidates the industry’s focus: the city hosts over 130 active shipyards and approximately 60,000 skilled workers, with a dry dock capacity for newbuilds reaching up to 300,000 DWT. Located approximately 30 km from Singapore along the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors, Batam constitutes roughly half of Indonesia’s shipyards and attracts investments under its Free Trade Zone status, thereby positioning itself as a pivotal catalyst in the nation’s strategic efforts to substantially augment its maritime GDP.
The key importance of Batam in the region
The variety of exhibitors showcased Batam’s strategic position as Indonesia’s key center for newbuilding and repair classification needs. The strong presence of offshore and heavy-lift segments — featuring drilling vessels, semi-submersibles, and processing equipment — also indicated active oil and gas development and offshore support production. Significant participation of international exhibitors from China, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea highlighted Batam’s role as a regional supply chain and equipment sourcing hub, extending beyond the domestic market.
The potential of the Batam market for the Polish classification society
Batam presents tangible opportunities for PRS. The shipyard cluster in the city, specializing in the construction of tankers, tugs, barges, and offshore support vessels, constitutes the primary addressable market for PRS classification and survey services within the region. Concurrently, the expanding offshore and heavy-lift sector indicates an emerging opportunity to position PRS offshore classification services with manufacturers and vessel owners active in that domain. Additionally, the prominent presence of international exhibitors enhances the potential for a referral network for vessels traversing the Malacca Strait corridor, which may pursue PRS classification for recognition within the European trade.
Indonesia – strategic direction for PRS
Batam’s shipbuilding and offshore cluster is one of the most concentrated in Asia, and IMOX 2026 reaffirmed it as a strategically important market for PRS to deepen its classification, certification, and technical advisory presence in Indonesia. We intend to cooperate with shipyards based in Batam and initially focus on the newbuildings and repair sectors.
International status and credibility of PRS
Participation of PRS in IMOX 2026 demonstrates its broader dedication to fostering relationships within Indonesia’s maritime sector and highlights PRS international engagement as an IACS member and a classification society recognized by the European Union.
