With effect from Nov. 1, a new agreement authorizing the Polish Register of Shipping to act on behalf of the Liberia Maritime Authority entered into force. Upon the contract, PRS is allowed to perform surveys and audits for compliance with the international conventions and local regulations on ships flying the Liberian flag, being in operation and under construction or reconstruction, in full scope.
The new agreement consolidates all contracts previously concluded with the Liberia Maritime Authority and is adjusted to current statutory requirements and market demands. It includes clauses unified for all recognized organizations (RO).
At present, Liberia is a country with the largest fleet in terms of gross tonnage – over 252 million GT represents 15,9% of the share in the global market (it exceeds Panama by 0,3%). Over the last fifteen years, the Liberian Register has doubled the number of ships sailing under its flag – currently, it is over 5800 vessels, of which more than half are bulk carriers and tankers.
The Flag State aspires to offer services at the highest level and be the most secure and quality-conscious flag in the world. Effective achievement of these objectives reflects Liberia’s position on the “White List” of the Port State Control Paris Memorandum of Understanding (Paris MoU). What is more, Liberia is also among the few flag states in the world with U.S. Coast Guard QUALSHIP21 certification.
